Notre Dame announced late on Tuesday that they have been selected as one of eight host sites for first and second round games in the NCAA Women’s Basketball tournament.
A press release from the university says that the games will be played at the Joyce on either March 21 and 23, or March 22 and 24.
The selection comes on the heels of the announcement that Notre Dame will also play host to games in the 2010 tournament. The addition of the 2009 games is a result of a return to 16 game sites, instead of the eight it had been since 2008.
“I can’t tell you how excited we are to hear that the Joyce Center has been selected as a host site for the 2009 and 2010 NCAA Tournaments,” said Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw, in a press release. “This is a great opportunity for our program, our University and the entire South Bend community, and we look forward to making the most of it.”
Notre Dame has been the host of tournament games five times in the past, most recently in 2004 when the Irish defeated Missouri State and Middle Tennessee to reach the Sweet 16. Notre Dame was also a host in 2001, when the team went on to win its first NCAA title.
