Diggins scores 40 as Washington beats Clay in girls sectionals

Skylar Diggins scored 40 points and defending 4A State Champion South Bend Washington held off Clay 78-68 in the opening round of the sectional playoffs.

Diggins' performance came in front of an electric crowd of more than 3,000, which including coaches representing Notre Dame, Maryland and UCLA.

Diggins didn't disapoint, scoring 20 points in each half.

The Colonials put up a fight. In fact, Clay opened up a 15-5 lead in the 1st quarter when sophomore Ariel Easton hit a 3-pointer.

Easton scored 30 for Clay.

Things got intense in the 2nd quarter as Easton and Diggins fought for a loose ball.

Washington would then go on a run. Karis Phillips hit a three for the Panthers to put them up 26-25.

Diggins then scored on a fast break as Washington took a 40-32 lead into the half.

Clay didn't go away. In the 3rd, Senior Christine Hamma fought in the lane for two offensive rebounds off missed shots and tied the game at 42 with the putback.

But Diggins poured it on, helping Washington extends its lead to eight, 55-43 after three quarters.

Emily Phillips scored nine for the Panthers.

Deserea Jones had 18 and Elese Daniel added 11 for Clay.

Washington now moves on to the Sectional Semis where they will face Penn.

The Kingsmen easily defeated Mishawaka 59-41 in the early game at Washington.

Junior Kelsey Reynolds scored 14 of her 17 points in the 1st half as Penn opened up an 18-5 lead after one quarter.

Sara Strachan scored 14, Lilly Svete had 12, and Emily Johnson added 11 for the Kingsmen.

Penn and Washington will play in the 1st game of Friday's semifinals. Tipoff is 6pm at the Great Western Forum.

Riley and Adams will play in semi #2 at 7:30.

The winners will meet for the Sectional Championship Saturday night at 7:30.
At Goshen, Elkhart Memorial easily defeated Northridge 60-37.

The Northern Lakes Conference champions will Elkhart Central in the semis.

The Blazers beat Concord 60-50 in overtime.

The two meet Friday at 6pm at Goshen. The other semifinal will feature Goshen and Warsaw.
In 3a, Plymouth defeated South Bend St. Joe 42-32 at the New Prairie sectional.

The Pilgrims will face Rochester in Friday's semifinals.
At the Northwood Sectional, 3a state runner-up Wawasee defeated the host Panthers 48-33.

Wawasee will next face Lakeland in the sectional semifinals Friday at 6pm.
In 2a at Laville, Bremen defeated Westview 67-52.

Bremen will face Fairfield Friday at 7:30 in the sectional semifinals.

LaVille and Jimtown will battle in the other semifinal on Friday at 6pm.
In 1a, defending State Champion Oregon-Davis defeated Argos 39-25.

The undefeated Bobcats will face Triton in the sectional semifinals. The Trojans beat Westville 46-17.

South Central Union Mills will face Marquette Catholic in the other semifinal on Friday at Oregon-Davis.
