Combined they have provided the South Bend School Corporation with 77 years of service.
At the end of the school year, two of Indiana's very best Athletic Directors---Clay's Greg Humnicky and Riley's John Berta---will retire.
Both men were honored at halftime of Friday night's Clay-Riley basketball game.
Berta served as the Riley AD for 26 years. He's been in the school corporation as a teacher since 1971. A Riley graduate, John also spent 20 years as a basketball coach.
"I'll miss the kids, I'll miss the coaches and I'll miss keeping it busy," Berta says. "But I'm looking forward to retirement."
"I think my body is wearing down. My spirit's still there but my body is wearing out---too many 15 hour days."
Humnicky has spent been in the South Bend School Corporation for 40 years, 20 as Clay's Athletic Director. Like John, Greg's roots are as a basketball coach as well. Humnicky is a graduate of South Bend Central High School.
"I was thinking what do I do next fall on a Friday night?" Humnicky began to explain.
"I'll show up at School Field or Jackson Field or Clay Field and sneak in the backdoor and watch it, but now I can watch it as a fan and not an adminstrator and I'm looking forward to doing that."
Humnicky is also a graduate of Purdue. He plans to finally use his season tickets in football and basketball to the fullest next year.
Both men were also Indiana HS football officials for 15 years.
