Jon Tenuta to join Irish football staff

When Chan Gailey was fired as the Georgia Tech football coach after the 2007 season, many thought that defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta would end up at maybe LSU or perhaps Michigan. It was announced Thursday that Tenuta, one of the nation's most highly respected coaches, will join Charlie Weis' staff at Notre Dame.

The move came about when assistant head coach for defense Bill Lewis decided to join the community relations staff within the department of athletics. Lewis, who had been with Weis since 2005, is one of the most popular coaches in the country. He also was instrumental in developing players like Tom Zbikowski, Chinedum Ndukwe, Mike Richardson and David Bruton while coaching at ND. Lewis is a former head coach at East Carolina and Georgia Tech.

Tenuta who has coached at at multitude of schools had the Ramblin' Wreck among the elite defenses in the nation without usually possessing elite talent. His units allowed Notre Dame only 17 points in games played in 2006 and 2007
