Purdue University alumnus and trustee Michael Birck will donate $5 million to the school's renovation of Mackey Arena.
The donation means Purdue now has $20 million of the $30 million it plans to raise privately for the $82 million project. The rest of the funding will come from money Purdue receives through the Big Ten Network.
Athletics director Morgan Burke has said the planned project would cost one-third as much as building a new arena and would eliminate the need to build two other new athletic facilities.
The project would keep the 40-year-old arena essentially the same inside while eliminating about 800 seats, improving ticket offices and consolidating athletic offices and training facilities under one roof.
