Notre Dame sophomore Luke Harangody scored 29 points and collected 16 rebounds to pace the Irish as ND took out West Virginia, 69-56 at the Joyce Center on Wednesday.
"It felt great," Harangody said after posting career highs in points and rebounds. "I hit my first couple of shots and you just get this sort of feeling like it could go all night."
Harangody was 7 of 8 from the field in the 1st half and finished the game 11 of 16 from the floor.
"I got into a groove and it felt good all night long and I felt I could take my man at any time," Harangody explained.
"Unbelievable," senior captain Rob Kurz said about Harangody's play. "That's one of the best performances I've seen in a long time."
"We've seen him have some great games but he's playing unbelievable and when he's rolling like that, we're just going to keep giving him the ball."
The Big East opener was tight for a time before Harangody established dominance inside on both offense and defense. He got help from Tory Jackson who hit three straight triples to stave off a WVU rally. Jackson finished with 12 points.
"This was a big win," Jackson said. "It was a statement. We had to let everyone know where we are at, maybe a little underrated. "
"They were one of the hottest teams coming in and now they know about us. We're going into Saturday hoping to let other teams know about us."
Next up for the Irish is a visit from UConn on Saturday. The Huskies won over Seton Hall on Wednesday. The tip on Saturday is set for 9pm
