Irish headed back to women's College Cup

The Duke women's soccer team may not have been ready for the weather they found in South Bend Friday night in the NCAA quarterfinals against Notre Dame.

With the wind chill, it felt like 15 degrees at Alumni Field as the Irish hosted the Blue Devils.

The harsh temperatures didn't stop more than 1,251fans from showing and supporting the Irish as they won a thrilling game 3-2 to advance to the College Cup semifinals for the 3rd time in 4 years.

Who to credit with the game-winning goal remains a question mark. With 13 minutes left and the game tied at 2, Kerri Hanks took a shot from the right side of the 6 that may or may not have been deflected in by Michelle Weissenhofer.

Both players are making claims to having scored the goal.

Regardless of who put it in, the Irish are moving on to the Final 4 where they will face Florida State next Saturday in College Station, Texas. The winner moves on to the national championship that Sunday.

Weissenhofer scored the game's 1st goal 20 minutes into the 1st half to give Notre Dame a 1-0 lead.

6 minutes into the 2nd half, Kerri Hanks laced up a perfect corner kick to the head of Brittany Bock who sent it in to make it 2-0.

Notre Dame has never lost a game in school history when up by that margin.

But that didn't matter to Duke. The Blue Devils scored two goal in 4 minutes, including a laser from CJ Ludemann to tie the game at 2.

That's when Hanks or Weissenhofer became the hero.

Notre Dame has not lost since September 23. At that point, the Irish had dropped to 3-4-1 on the season. The team's only blemish since was a shootout defeat in the Big East Championship to West Virginia. That is officially considered a tie and not a loss in the record book.

Notre Dame lost in last year's College Cup finals to North Carolina. The Irish won it all in 2004, when the current seniors were freshman.
