Weis: Time to move the program forward

A day after beating Duke 28-7, reflected back on the game and looked ahead to next Saturday against Stanford.

Weis said the Duke game was about winning a home game for the seniors.

Now the Irish have a different theme head into the season finale in California.

"The theme is moving the program forward," Weis said Sunday. "I think that we made one small step Saturday, okay, but I think we've got to be moving the program forward."

"The last thing I want to do is go to Stanford and all of a sudden lay an egg and go into the off season saying, well, you won at home on Senior Day, but you couldn't tie another good performance together."

"So I think we want to be moving the program forward; simultaneously not losing sight of the fact that this is the last game for a large number of players. And I think that you can never lose the fact that, you know, being considerate of the guys that are on your team that have been playing for the last time."

One of the keys to moving the program forward is the development of quarterback, Jimmy Clausen. The freshman has 6 touchdown passes in his last two games, including 3 against Duke.

"Here is the first thing that I was looking for Saturday," Weis began to explain. "It was a little chilly yesterday, right, 45 degrees, a little drizzle, snow flurries and here is a kid from California, and you say, okay, is he going to shrivel up; is he going to be looking for a parka every time he turned around. I mean, there was absolutely no evidence."

"And even when we came offer the field like there might have been a dropped ball or something to end the series and there was no, you no, finger pointing or head down or those things. Those are very, very positive signs for a young quarterback."

Weis jokingly said Jimmy is holding onto the quarterback position by a nose over 5th year senior safety Tom Zbikowski.
