The Penn Kingsmen have faced battle after battle over the last 6 weeks.
And they’ve won every one of them.
But Friday night, Penn was on the other side of a comeback when they saw Merrillville erase a 20-7 Kingsmen lead to win 21-20 in the 5A Regional finals.
Penn’s season comes to an end with a 12-1 record.
Steve Depositar rushed for more than 200 yards and all three Kingsmen touchdowns in the loss.
Depositar’s 3rd touchdown in the 2nd quarter put Penn up 20-7.
Merrillville would respond with a late 2nd quarter drive to pull within 6 at the half. 6’6” quarterback Dolapo McCarthy ran for a huge 40 yard gain inside the Kingsmen 10-yard line. McCarthy finished off the drive with a QB sneak for a touchdown.
In the 3rd quarter, McCarthy found Demario Richardson over the middle. Richardson made a fantastic move and was off 64 yards for the touchdown to put Merrillville up 21-20.
That was the final points of the game.
Penn would have its chances, however.
Inside the Pirate 10-yard line, the Kingsmen would fumble. Penn coach Cory Yeoman disputed the call, but to no avail.
Late in the 3rd quarter, the Kingsmen would line up for a 40-yard field goal attempt, but the kick would hook at the last second and just miss.
With 15 seconds left, Coley Moore couldn’t convert on a 4th and 10 from his own 39 ending the game.
