Kingsmen back in Regionals

Last year, Penn lost in the Sectional Championship and missed Regionals for the first time since 1994.

"We had a bad taste in our mouth after last year," senior safety Zach Gard explains.

"That kind of fueled us this off-season. It was the fuel to the fire. That has helped a lot."

The Kingsmen responded this season by winning sectionals and reaching the Regional Championship once again.

"It's a great accomplishment for our seniors," head coach Cory Yeoman says.

"They've done a great job to lead us to this point. There are only 8 teams left in the state and we're one of them. We're pretty darn excited."

Penn will travel to Merrillville Friday at 8pm in the Pizza Hut Spotlight Game of the Week.

Merrillville is 11-1. Penn is 12-0.

The last time the Kingsmen won regionals, it was 2004 against the Pirates.

Penn's undefeated season hasn't come without its challenges, however. In fact, The Kingsmen have had tight matchups each of the last 6 weeks.

"It's been incredible--all the way since last year's workouts," Gard says.

"Us seniors have kind of molded this whole team together. It really is a family here. We would do anything for each other. We're all very, very close."

The winner advances to the 5A Semi-State.
