Friday Night Football: 4 Michiana teams still alive

There may be no stopping the St. Joseph Bears.

St. Joe steamrolled over arch-rival Lakeshore 49-14 in the Division 3 District Championship Friday night in St. Joseph.

The Bears will host Lansing Sexton next week in Regionals.

St. Joseph got things started in the 1st quarter when QB Ethan Schweir found Mat Jewell for a 30-yard completion to the Lancers 1-yard line.

RB Ryan Bock punched it in to give St. Joe a 7-0 lead.

Bock would follow it up with a 1-yard TD catch from Schweir in the 2nd quarter to make it 14-0.

Lakeshore responded. QB Zak Wasserman hit Cam Moore in the back of the end zone and Moore made a fantastic catch to pull in the touchdown and make it 14-7.

But the Bears were too much in this one. Schweir completed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Palmer Averill to make it 21-7 and put the game out of reach.

The win is the 2nd straight for St. Joseph over Lakeshore after going 17 years without a victory over their arch-rivals.

St. Joe has not been undefeated this far into a season since they went to the State finals in 1988.

Buchanan, Dowagiac, and Constantine all saw their seasons come to end Friday night. Cassopolis plays Saturday at 1pm against Mendon.

In Indiana, Penn was looking to return to the top of Sectional 2.

The Kingsmen saw their 11-year Sectional Championship run come to an end last season.

They'd have to get it done against a familiar face.

Penn alum Brent Baldwin, in his first season as head coach at Goshen, was on the other side of the field.

This was a defensive battle that saw Penn lead 7-3 at the half.

In the 2nd half, the Kingsmen had a number of opportunities to score.

Inside the Redskins 10, Steve Depositar fumbled and Goshen recovered.

After a 3 and out, Penn again marched inside the Goshen 10. But on a 4th and 1 at the Redskin 2-yd line, Depositar was stuffed.

Goshen again went three and out and punted. Depositar mishandled the punt, but quickly recovered to return it inside the 10-yard line for a 3rd time.

This time Depositar wouldn't let it go to waste running in the 8-yard score.

Penn wins 13-3. They will travel on the road to Merrillville next Friday night in Regionals.

In 5A Sectional 3, Warsaw saw its season come to an end at the hands of Fort Wayne Snider.

They cruised to the 52-14 win.

In 4A, defending semi-state champion Concord will not be returning to State.

The Minutemen lost to Lowell 31-21 Friday Night.

Down 7-0 in the 1st half, Wes Smith made an incredible touchdown run where he broke a numble of tackles before leaping into the endzone to the tie the game at 7.

The Red Devils regained the lead 10-7 on a field goal.

Smith put Concord up 14-10 with another touchdown run.

But Lowell would take control from there and win 31-21.

In 3A, Jordan Taylor rushed for more than 300 yards and 4 touchdowns as South Bend St. Joseph's is moving on with a 41-27 win over Northwood.

The Panthers started the game with a 7:00 drive, culminating with a Skylar Titus to Derk Loucks touchdown pass.

The Indians responded with a touchdown on their first possession with a Taylor TD run.

On the first play from scrimmage on the next drive, Northwood fumbled inside its own 10-yard line.

Taylor than ran another TD in to make it 14-7 St. Joseph's.

Northwood would march back down field, only to have another fumble deep in Indians' territory.

St. Joe would take advantage with a 51-yard Taylor run. That setup Dustin White for a 12-yard score to make it 20-7.

The Indians then surprised everyone at School Field with an onside kick. They recovered it.

Taylor capped off the drive with a 34-yard touchdown run.

In 2A, Jimtown's undefeated season came to an end with a 24-17 loss to Fort Wayne Luers.

Ryan Konrath scored two first half touchdowns to put the Jimmies up 14-7.

But the Knights were too much in this one and move on to Regionals.

In 1A, Triton defeated South Newton 36-21 for its first ever Sectional Championship.

Troy McIntyre tossed a touchdown to Zachary Moriarty to make it 22-13 and then Adam Creighbaum took one 70 plus yards to the house.

The eruption after that play was huge from the players, fans, and even the coaches.
