1988 was the last time St. Joseph was undefeated at this point in the season.
The Bears reached the Michigan State Finals that year.
To stay undefeated, St. Joseph will have to get by a common foe this Friday night in arch-rival Lakeshore.
The Game, scheduled for a 7:30 kickoff at St. Joseph High School, is our Pizza Hut Spotlight Game of the Week.
The Bears defeated the Lancers for the first time since 1991 earlier this season 21-3.
Lakeshore, meanwhile, is the last team to beat St. Joseph. And it happened in this very game last year as the Lancers won the District Championship.
"We're definitely still thinking about that," Bears senior wide receiver Brad Guinane explains. "That was our last game of the season and we couldn't come out with it."
"The monkey is not quite off our back yet because this is higher stakes---District Championship."
St. Joe head coach Elliot Uzelac knows this game means everything to these neighboring communities.
"In this part of the state, when Lakeshore and St. Joe play, it's huge," Uzelac says.
"We have the district championship and let's face it, the winner goes on and the loser goes home. We want to win it bad and I know Lakeshore does too."
"This is a big-time neighborhood brawl," Uzelac says. "It's for bragging rights in the neighborhood. When you get that going, it's all out."
"It's going to be a great night for football. It really is."
