Sophomore offensive lineman Matt Carufel leaves the Irish

Matt Carufel is leaving the Irish.

The sophomore lineman started at right guard for the Michigan State, Purdue and UCLA games.

On Tuesday, he fell behind Eric Olsen on the depth chart and a day later decided to take leave from the team.

Carufel was not with the team for Notre Dame's game against Boston College.

Late Sunday night, Charlie Weis issued a statement announcing Carufel is not coming back.

""I spoke via telephone with Matt Carufel Sunday evening and he informed me that he was going to leave the team and withdraw from the University of Notre Dame. I appreciate all Matt has done for Notre Dame and wish him nothing but the best."
