Boston College holds off Irish; ND now 1-6

It felt like the Purdue game all over again.

The Irish failed to score in the 1st half, fell behind big, were sparked by Evan Sharpley but ultimately lost.

4th-ranked Boston College held off the Irish 27-14 at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday.

ND falls to 1-6. Boston College is now 7-0.

With the score 13-0 in the 3rd quarter, Jimmy Clausen threw his 2nd interception of the game to Tyronne Pruitt.

That setup Andre Callender's 3rd touchdown of the game to put BC up 20-0.

Clausen was 7 of 20 for 60 yards. He had 0 touchdowns and two intereceptions.

Charlie Weis chose to make a switch at quarterback.

Junior Evan Sharpley came in and led ND to its first touchdown of the day, finding Robby Parris for a 19-yard score.

Sharpley threw for more yards on the drive (63) than Clausen had for the game (60).

On the next drive, freshman Brian Smith picked off a Matt Ryan pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown.

Smith became the first freshman since 1977 to return an Int for a TD.

The BC lead was down to 20-14, and the celebration was beginning. But the celebration went too long and the Irish were flagged for a penalty.

The ensuing kickoff was short and BC took over with great field position.

That led Ryan to find Kevin Challenger for a 13-yard touchdown to make it 27-13 in the 3rd.

In the 4th, Sharpley engineered another big drive.

On a 3rd and 10, he made a huge scramble and found John Carlson for what appeared to be a 1st down.

But a replay made it 4th and 1.

On the next play, Sharpley hit Parris in the end zone for what appeared to be a touchdown.

But Mike Turkovich was flagged for a holding penalty and the touchdown was erased.

On 4th and 11, Sharpley could not complete the pass---and BC took over.

Sharpley finished the day 11 of 29 for 135 yards and a touchdown.

Charlie Weis said after the game that Sharpley provided a spark and that Clausen appeared to be digged up and that's why he made the change.

Weis would not say whether Sharpley's performance would lead to him starting next week against USC.
