Weis: Mid-season Report

For the first time this season, Notre Dame heads into a game with a win under its belt.

The Irish are coming off a 20-6 victory over UCLA last Saturday. Now they face undefeated Boston College---the 4th-ranked team in the country.

Midway through the regular season, head coach Charlie Weis gave a progress report on the Irish season thus far.

"I think the greatest sense of accomplishment in a team that's 1-5 is it doesn't act like a team, doesn't practice like a team that's 1-5. I only can credit the players, "Weis said at his weekly Tuesday press conference.

"I'd like to sit there and pat myself on the back, but it's really the character of our team because most teams when they're 0-5 don't act like a team that still thinks they can win. They don't practice that way, they don't act that way, and it says a lot for the character of our players."

Despite getting its first win of the season, the Irish still have plenty of areas to improve, especially on offense. Notre Dame will have to produce a lot more if they want to beat a Boston College that puts points on the board and has the 4th best defense against the run in the country.

"The biggest thing I'm encouraged at is I think our best ball is yet to come," Weis explained.

"You'd like to sit there and say you're playing your best ball early in the year, but I think with this team, from where we are, I can't do anything about games 1 through 6."

"All I can do is do stuff for games 7 through 12, and I'd have to feel very strongly in all three aspects the arrow is pointing up."
