That was the last time the Penn Kingsmen lost a Northern Indiana Conference game.
The 142nd straight win didn't come easily last week against Mishawaka. Brian Lares made a big hit in the end zone with seconds left to pop the ball out of the hands of Caveman Ryan Warmoth.
Win 143 was even harder.
Elkhart Central opened up a 20-0 lead on the Kingsmen. Penn cut the lead to 23-13 at the half.
After a field goal in the 3rd quarter, the Kingsmen pulled within 7.
Tony Bodle then scored a pair of touchdowns to give Penn the lead 30-23.
Central didn't roll over. Chris Roberson engineered a drive to the Penn 4-yard line but saw his pass picked off by guess who---Lares, who was the hero once again.
Penn survives 30-23.
The win gives the Kingsmen their 22nd straight NIC championship.
The team that almost beat Penn last week---Mishawaka---was in a shootout with Clay Friday night.
Ryan Warmoth jump-started the scoring with a long touchdown run just minutes into the game.
After a defensive stop, Tyler Sult returned a punt 75 yards to put Mishawaka up 13-0 in the 1st quarter.
Clay responded minutes later. Quarterback Mark Miller hit Matt Timm with a perfect 30 yard pass to cut the lead to 13-7.
On the final play of the 1st quarter, the Colonials elected to go for it on a 4th and two from the Mishawaka 24.
The call was a QB sneak for Miller, but the quarterback did a lot more than get the first down. Miller broke a tackle, then another, stayed on his feet and took it 24 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.
In the 2nd quarter, Mishawaka quarterback Kyle Heatherly connected on back-to-back touchdown passes to give the Cavemen the lead for good.
Mishawaka wins 49-23.
At Marian high school, Adams defeated the Knights 31-28.

Adams is now 4-4.
Marian has its 2-game winning streak snapped.
In the Pizza Hut Spotlight Game of the Week, it was a battle of Michigan rivals.
But the battle didn't last long.

Ryan Bock ran it from 1-yard out to give St. Joe the early 7-0 lead.
In the 2nd quarter, Ethan Schweir connected with Palmer Averill 33 yards to make it 14-0.
Later in the 2nd, Schweir would find Brad Guinane, who broke a tackle and ran it in to make it 27-0 Bears at the half.
Constantine bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 50-20 win over Centreville.
Down 7-3, Falcon QB Anthony Miller found Jared McBride for a 50-yard touchdown to put Constantine up for good.
