There may be a quarterback controversy at Notre Dame once again.
The Irish fell to 0-5 with a 33-19 loss to Purdue but backup quarterback Evan Sharpley was very productive in relief of starter Jimmy Clausen.
Clausen went down with a hip injury in the 2nd half, bringing Sharpley into the game. Sharpley helped erase a 23-0 halftime deficit to pull ND within 26-19.
With the Irish down 33-19, Sharpley led ND down field once again, but threw an interception in the endzone that ended the Irish hopes of an unthinkable comeback.
The Irish now have a 7-game losing streak dating back to last season. That's the 2nd longest losing streak in school history.
Purdue is now 5-0. The Boilermakers will host Ohio State next week in West Lafayette.
The Irish had a terrible first half. Purdue's high energy offense rolled over the Irish D. Clausen threw a 1st half interception and the Irish had a costly fumble.
Purdue took a 23-0 lead into halftime.
In the 3rd quarter, Tom Zbikowski picked off a Curtis Painter pass to give the Irish the ball at the Purdue 37.
Clausen completed back to back passes to Duval Kamara to setup a 1st and goal.
After a hand-off to Junior Jabbee, Clausen exited the game.
Evan Sharpley came in and threw an incomplete pass.
Clausen returned for the next play. On 4th and goal from the 5, Clausen completed his first ever college touchdown pass to John Carlson.
Brandon Walker missed the extra point. Purdue's lead was 23-6.
After a Purdue 3 and out, Clausen hit Kamara for a 16-yard completion, but Clausen would again leave the game and be replaced by Sharpley.
Purdue would get the ball back and kick a 29-yard field goal to extend the lead to 26-6.
With seconds left in the 3rd quarter, Clausen attempted his final pass of the game on the 1st play of the next drive.
Clausen finished the day 18 of 26 passing for 170 yards. He had one touchdown and one interception.
Sharpley re-entered the game and led the Irish on a big drive. The Irish went for it on 4th and 5 at the Purdue 37 and Sharpley hit Golden Tate 43 yards for a first down. Tate made a fabulous catch.
Sharpley completed the drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Kamara in the 4th quarter.
Kamara had 6 catches for 69 yards and the touchdown.
Walker missed another extra point, making it 26-12 Purdue.
The Irish defense again held Purdue to a 3 and out.
Sharpley engineered another productive drive and hit Tate for a 25 yard touchdown with just under 8 minutes left in the game. Tate had 3 receptions for 104 yards.
The Irish were within 7, 26-19.
But on the next drive, Curtis Painter threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Dustin Keller to extend the Purdue lead to 33-19.
Painter was 22 of 37 for 252 yards. He had two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Sharpley again brought the Irish downfield late in the game. But with under 5 minutes left, Sharpley threw an interception in the end zone.
Sharpley finished the day with 208 yards passing. He completed 16 of 26 passes, had two touchdowns and one interception.
