ND Hockey: Ready to build a legacy

5 months ago, the Notre Dame hockey team began making headlines no one could have ever imagined.

Just two years removed from the worst season in school history, the Irish Icers had the best season in school history.

Notre Dame won the CCHA regular season and tournament titles for the first time in school history and won a NCAA tourney game for the first time in school history.

The success of last season has spilled over into this year. A unknown person has donated $15 million towards upgrades for a new hockey facility.

Students and local fans are thinking about the team and getting excited for ND's first game on October 12th.

"There is a lot of excitement about the program," Irish head coach Jeff Jackson says. "We have good kids and good players."

"We had a great year last year but you can't build a program on one season," senior center Mark Van Guilder explains. "We're real excited to get going this year and prove ourselves all over again."

"As far as most college athletes, especially hockey, all the guys can say they're going [to a school] to win a national championship," sophomore defensman Kyle Lawson says. "Thats one of our goals, but we're also building a program here."

"That's something special. Not everyone gets to do that---especially at a University like Notre Dame---its one of the top in the country. To be able to build a program and be on a chase for the national championship is pretty exciting."
