The White House says President Barack Obama spoke separately with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minster Mario Monti about economic conditions in Europe as he traveled to California for campaign fundraisers.

White House press secretary Jay Carney says the leaders spoke Wednesday about the importance of taking steps to strengthen the resilience of the eurozone and foster economic growth in Europe. The calls came ahead of the G-20 Summit scheduled for later this month in Mexico.

European leaders are trying to take steps to prevent a eurozone meltdown, a move that could weaken the global economy. Obama discussed the situation in Europe with British Prime Minister David Cameron on Tuesday.
