Elkhart County discusses changing to voting centers

Officials in Elkhart County are constructing a new system for voting across the county.

Wednesday afternoon, County Clerk Wendy Hudson spoke to the League of Women Voters about her streamlined desire. If approved, Elkhart County would replace all 120 local precincts with 16 easy-to-find voting centers.

The move would save the county tens-of-thousands of dollars in polling machines, office supplies, and worker stipends at a time when extra funding has been hard to come by.

"They typically try to get us to cut our budget by ten percent and it's very hard to do. We've got our budget down to the bare bones now so if they ask us to come down another ten percent, it will be difficult," said Elkhart County Clerk Wendy Hudson.

In 2007, Wayne, Tippecanoe and Cass Counties implemented the voting center-system; all have called it a success.

However, to make the switch, Elkhart County will first need to file a plan with the state and gain unanimous approval from the Elkhart County Election Board.
