Michigan's polls closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

In Bertrand Township in Berrien County, voters decided to give the boot to three township leaders.

Supervisor John Mefford, Treasurer Linda Layher, and trustees Dick Haigh and David Zelmer were up for a recall after they voted to delay the collections of summer taxes, which opponents say would cost the township dearly.

Mefford also faces charges for allegedly writing $2,600 worth of bad personal checks. He was recalled by the voters with 66-percent voting in favor of a recall. About 34-percent voted no.

Treasurer Linda Layher was recalled by vote as well but has previously resigned . It was a close vote with 53-percent voting yes, and 47-percent voting no.

Bertrand Township Trustee Dick Haigh is also out of a job, with 56-percent voting yes, while 44-percent voted to keep him in office.

The only township leader safe from the recall was trustee David Zelmer. Voters decided to keep him in office with 55-percent of the vote.
