Five of the candidates for mayor met Tuesday night to discuss their plans for the city.

The St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce billed the event as a large-scale job interview.

Candidates were asked ten questions selected in advance, and then members of the audience were able to question the candidates.

All say they have big plans if given the opportunity to lead South Bend.

Mike Hamann said, "I'm going to propose that we back the tax abatement before the South Bend Council that was proposed by the Chamber of Commerce and Project Future, try to find some way to look at the rules and regulations we have to see if there's anything that's inhibiting economic growth."

Ryan Dvorak said, "We need to do a better job of economic development. Everyone knows we need more jobs and I think we can streamline a lot of the functions of city government to help work with local businesses a lot better."

Pete Buttigieg said, "South Bend needs a comprehensive economic strategy and it has to include a place both for existing businesses to grow and for the attraction of investment from outside businesses. I believe we have all the assets to do it."

Barrett Berry said, "We're asking all 9,000 plus employers in St Joseph County to hire one South Bend resident. We want to immediately address unemployment here and a few other very creative initiatives to grow jobs and bring businesses and strengthen public education."

Wayne Curry said, "I want to form a business advisory panel to advise the mayor, if I get in. We have members of the business community advise the mayor on economic development, practices and things like that."

The primary is May 3.
