A Clark County commissioner is questioning the doubling of the building director's salary and the use of a company owned by another county commissioner as a subcontractor in the local government center's $4.2 million renovation.
Commissioner Mike Moore told The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Ky., he questions why Mark VanGilder's salary was raised to $100,000 during the project.
He also says it "doesn't look proper" that the biggest subcontractor on the project - Independent Piping Inc. - is owned by fellow Commissioner Les Young and his brothers. The company replaced the center's heating and air conditioning system for an estimated $2.2 million.
VanGilder says it would have cost more to pay someone else to do his extra work, and Young says he filed a conflict of interest statement with the county.
