Susan K. Carpenter is retiring after nearly 30 years as Indiana's chief public defender.

The Indiana Supreme Court announced Wednesday that Carpenter will retire in May. She was appointed by the court in October 1981.

As public defender, Carpenter represents indigent prison inmates in challenges to convictions and sentences.

Carpenter graduated magna cum laude from Smith College and then attended Indiana University Maurer School of Law. She worked as a deputy state public defender and Wayne County public defender from 1976 to 1981, when she was appointed state public defender. She received the Indiana State Bar Association 2000 Achievement Award and serves on numerous boards and commissions.

The court says it will soon announce the procedure for selecting a new chief public defender.
