It was a head to head debate Saturday in Elkhart, as the two Sheriff candidates, Democrat Larry Owens and Republican Brad Rogers, squared off.

Owens is an outsider, whereas Rogers has been with the Sheriff's Department for 22 years.

Both say they are the man to head the county police force.

Brad Rogers said, "On day one, when you take office, whether, if it's somebody that's not in law enforcement, have a learning curve to take, and whether it's a critical incident, a tornado or maybe it's a shooting, we need somebody who's right there and can deal with that at that moment."

Larry Owens said, "I want to save the taxpayers money. I believe we've built too big a jail for this county. Especially with the new things that are coming about, the new studies, and the state of Indiana itself is studying different alternatives to incarceration. And that's my thing: alternatives to incarceration, and rehab."

The event today was sponsored by IUSB.
