Teenagers may have a reputation for laziness, but one Michiana group might change your mind about that.
There is an organization at Triton High School in Bourbon that puts teens hard at work in meaningful volunteer positions and they are the latest winners of the Martin’s Super Market “One School at a Time” grant.
“Thank you very much for your examples of leadership and promise… and thank you for all of your efforts with what you’ve done in the community,” said Tony DeCloedt with Martin’s, as he gave the group a check for $1,000.
The grant will be used as seed money to help the students grow their organization into something bigger and better.
As principal at Triton High School, it was Mike Chobanov’s vision to recruit a select group of students to do community service work. And the Triton Principal’s Service Corp is not your average high school club.
“This club was very different. Right off the bat, I signed up for it and got accepted to it and we started doing things,” explained senior Neil Robinson.
The club does things like sprucing up the local park by scraping and painting the bleachers.
“What I like about it is we get to go out in the community and give back,” said senior Austin Davis.
The group even took a road trip to the VA hospital in Indianapolis.
“I think when they saw patients tearing up, ‘Why are you coming this far to see us?’ and giving them a Triton t-shirt, it meant a lot to the patients and it meant a lot to the students too,” said Chobanov.
Junior Kandace Terry said, “To volunteer in the community means to me, it gives me the chance to see different people… show them something different, show them that kids in the community do care about them.”
These students will put the grant money to good use by using it to help them help others.
The students are coming up with new service projects for the new year; among their plans are working at a soup kitchen and digging into a school landscaping project.
You can still apply to the grant program, sponsored by Martin’s Super Markets.
The winning schools get a check for $1,000 and there will be a new winner each months.
Schools only need to apply once and you can do so by clicking here.
