Cupcakes are a rarity in Michiana. However, one "Shoppe" in Elkhart is serving them up gourmet, where one's sure to find their favorite flavor.
If variety is the spice of life, then the Mini Delights Bake Shoppe is where one can live it up and indulge. Located between Main Street and Second Street in downtown Elkhart, owner Kelly Bowdin bakes while her daughters serve.
As the only gourmet cupcake shop in the area, it is rapidly becoming as successful as it has in larger cities.
"I think that's really what the catch is with them is that you can do so much with cupcakes and you're not just stuck with just a cake," said manager Ashley Krieg.
The Shoppe, which opened in December of 2009, specializes in gourmet cupcake flavors like chocolate raspberry, carrot cake, Snicker-Doodle, Reese's Peanut Butter and seven others. All in addition to a flavor of the week.
The most popular flavor, strawberry, both in the cake and on top.
"I think it's just the combination of our strawberries and our butter cream and the cake and the icing," said Krieg.
Speaking of icing, customers can chose from butter cream, cream cheese icing, even a semi-sweet chocolate that uses three different types of cocoa.
Cupcakes are now trending at weddings with many couples foregoing the traditional cake.
"We allow our brides to do as many flavors as they want so some of them go with 12 or 13 flavors, some stick 6," said Krieg. "It's nice for them and guests because you can just pick it up go and no mess at the end."
Everything at the Shoppe is homemade with orders baked several times daily.
Despite being a small family operation, advanced orders mean big business with some ranging from a couple dozen to more than 3,000. Regardless of the size, each one is iced by hand.
Flavors change all the time and the Shoppe takes suggestions. The next upcoming flavor will be a maple cupcake with bacon.
The Shoppe offers full size and mini versions cupcakes proving these are the Lay's Potato Chips of the confectionary world—you cannot each just one.
