Donuts remain one of the most popular items people grab and go when they head off to work, but when it comes to personalizing a donut there aren't many options. That is, until now.
Chris Norvell and his wife Harmony opened up "Donuts by Design" in the Plymouth Plaza three weeks ago.
"We were looking into a restaurant of some sort to start, and we realized there's no donut shops within about 30 miles of here. So, we thought donuts would be great," Norvell said.
Starting many days at 3 a.m. Norvell heads in to make the donuts, cutting the yeast ones and frying the cake ones.
But, it's the toppings that get the most stares. Kids of all ages imagine what could make a donut the best it can be. Candies, icings, and nuts are all possibilities.
At $.99 each, flavors like mint chocolate chip, peanut butter and jelly, and s'mores with marshmallow are all popular, but the title of favorite goes to the banana and peanut butter.
"You can top them and make them savory, almost like a dinner roll, or you can make them really sweet like a dessert," Norvell said.
Then there's one that not only raises eyebrows, but also your cholesterol. It's a maple bacon donut. After a quick dip and spin in the icing, they drizzle icing on bacon slices as well.
Whether it's strawberry chocolate chip or orange creamcicle, these donuts really do prove it's good to bring home the bacon.
