Monday, several Transpo routes will be reduced and one even eliminated. Some riders say it will add an extra hour or two to their trip. Unfortunately, tough times means Transpo had to make some tough decisions.
Transpo rider John Reese uses the bus to travel all over town. Reese says, “I use Transpo often because I have doctor's appointments and things like that. I actually don't have a car right now.”
For Reese, getting to all those appointments is about to get more complicated. Starting next week, service on several routes will be reduced and the number 2 Bendix route will be eliminated.
These changes are making it even harder for the thousands of people who rely on Transpo to get around during tough times.
Denice Carter is another Transpo rider. She says, “I am a single mother and grandmother and I don't have a car. I only make enough money to pay rent and bills so I’ve got to catch the bus to work.”
80% of transit systems are either having to increase fares or reduce service. Unfortunately, Transpo is a part of that 80%. The reductions all stem from local and national legislators putting the brakes on some of their funding, with most voters supporting the decision.
The general populace of the state of Indiana voted to put in place some property tax caps on how much personal property tax you can pay. That affected all the governmental entities in the state of Indiana.
Transpo has been affected to the tune of $1.2 million, which is a significant portion of their budget, and more cuts could be coming this summer.
Over the next few months leaders from Mishawaka and South Bend will meet to discuss if anything can be done to make sure the system survives. According to riders, something absolutely has to get done. Riders say that if people cannot go back and forth to work conveniently, the economy is never going to get better.
Ambassadors from Transpo have been riding the buses for weeks telling people about the route changes. They hope the cutbacks will make service more efficient.
