Tips for a beautiful flower bed

South Bend, Ind. Landscaping is not only a source of beauty for your home, it can also be a solution to water problems.

In Thursday's 16 Curb Appeal update, Mark Linton shows us how you can make your flower beds work in your favor.

“While you're re-landscaping your home, it's the perfect time to make sure you've got good positive drainage coming away from the house,” says Mark Linton of Linton’s Enchanted Gardens.

That means build the soil higher near the house and slope it lower to the yard. And when you get to the edge of your landscaping, you might consider installing edging.

“A good quality edging really makes your landscape low maintenance, if it's properly installed,” says Mark. “We are going to make sure that the grade level has dropped or lowered 2 inches so that when we add that weed barrier, and the stone ground cover, our final grade level matches up with the height of our edging.”

The same goes for the edge of the sidewalk or driveway.

“Just like we did along the edging, we have excavated about two inches of soil along the sidewalk here, we're going to bring our weed barrier, not only to the sidewalk but, we're going to touch the sidewalk and lip it up here,” says Mark. “That will help ensure that we don’t have any weeds growing between the weed barrier as well as the sidewalk.”

Another drainage solution is a feature called the French drain, a water chain is added to the porch to lead the water to a hole that's filled with washed river gravel.

“What that's going to allow that water to do is slowly percolate into the soil, and disperse that water, and keep it away from the homes foundation,” says Mark. “By adding the stone ground cover, that actually creates little voids, rather than compacted soil. So that allows the water to slowly percolate out into the existing soil.”
