Plant selection started for the 16 Curb Appeal winner

Gardening isn't just for those with green thumbs. You can learn a lot if you spend some time with landscaping experts.

Our 16 Curb Appeal Winners recently got to visit the Garden Center at Linton's where they picked out a wide variety of plants, trees and shrubs for their new yard.

When Christan, Patrick and baby Patrick Shelton visited Linton's Enchanted Gardens, it was truly a lesson in landscaping. They put together a wish list that they shared with Mark Linton.

“At the top of the list has got to be low maintenance landscaping,” says Mark Linton.

That means perennial plants, and colorful shrubs and trees.

Christan's one request, a tree like one in her neighborhood that blooms in the early spring, it's a redbud, and mark found a different variety.

“This is a Forest Pansy redbud,” says Linton “Blooms exactly like the tree she's been admiring all these years but it also has a purple burgundy colored leaf so after its done blooming, you get a lot of color with the leaves and the foliage.”

Mark helped them select evergreen shrubs that will have blue and gold tones. And introduced them to other plants that will do well in their yard.

“A flowering hydrangea, they have a reputation of being hard to grow,” says Linton. “This one is not. It is guaranteed to bloom every summer and blooms for a long period of time. 15

Knock out roses provide long lasting color.

“Roses have been considered very high maintenance in the past, this is actually a very low maintenance rose, blooms all spring summer and fall,” says Linton. “It is very very easy to take care of.”

Iron window boxes will add pizzaz to the front of their home.

Linton we're going to fill these up with annual flowers, have a nice cascading effect, add some bright cheery color under the two bedroom windows. 09

“I really liked the ideas of doing the flowers underneath the window, to add more color,” says Christan Shelton.

The Shelton's are excited for the 16 Curb Appeal Project to get underway.

The Shelton's also picked out a bench and a small fountain. Next up for the Sheltons, the blueprints for the yard.
