As we continue to follow the front yard makeover for our 16 Curb Appeal winners in Elkhart, we are learning more about keeping our own yards looking great.
Blooming flowers and plants have a special place in any garden, but there is something else that is needed to help them look their best.
Mulch can do a world of good to any yard.
One special touch to any landscaping project is often overlooked.
Mark Linton, owner of Linton’s Enchanted Gardens, says, “Bark mulch not only beautifies the landscape, but it has other benefits as well.”
He says the mulch is actually hard at work, keeping out the weeds and cooling things down.
“The bark actually brings down the soil temperatures and cools the roots of the plants. So when we're having the real stressful heat of the summer, bark is helping to provide an insulation blanket, so that the plants do not dry out as quickly.”
There are some important mulching rules to remember.
“It's extremely important, around the base of all the plants, that you do not have a thick layer of bark mulch.”
Mark says only an inch or so is needed. More than that could hurt the plant.
“If it's any more than that, you really risk harming the plant. That can cause suffocation and possibly even death.”
