Technology is changing the face of business today. Thanks to smart phones, laptops and tablets, business can take place just about anywhere.
A company in Plymouth is giving professionals a place to set up shop when they're in town.
The Midas Center, in downtown Plymouth, features wide open space, desks, computers, whiteboards and even coffee. While it looks like a trendy office building, this is actually something known as a co-work space.
Andrea Cook runs the Midas Center and said of the environment, “Co-work space is a shared works space, an office setting that allows like minded individuals, professionals, creatives to work. There’s ever type of style. The co-work space is geared towards coming together and sharing work space, ideas, and costs.”
After using co-work space in other towns, Cook decided to bring this new concept to Michiana.
Cook explained the advantages of the co-work space by saving, “It is just like joining a gym, only for professionalism. You get the benefits of shared equipment, shared desks, shared conference room, shared white boards, all of that, magazines, events ... We also have workshops and networking events.”
The cost is $25 a day, and it gets cheaper with longer membership options. It's a far cry from what it takes to have your own office space.
Don Baker, a creative professional, said, “You have your rent, you have your mortgage payment, property tax ... You have your water bill, your electric your gas bill, internet bill ... These things really add up. I know from running my own business in the past that when you add all that together that can really be a barrier to being profitable and a barrier to the business starting up and trying to be successful.”
While saving money is one of the goals, there is another advantage.
Cook said, “When I first started co-working, I thought it was about shared costs and shared space. I didn't realize that the real benefit of the synergy and the collaboration of being around like minded professionals, and sharing ideas and getting support ... that was a key benefit I noticed.”
Baker continued, “I think co-working offers you a chance to co-mingle with other creative and professional people ... kind of gives you a chance to feel that creativity, that inspiration.”
Inspiration and saving money is an attractive alternative to the traditional office space.
“I thought, 'Wow, this is a really cool concept to be able to share space with other professionals.'" Baker said. " ... Be able to pool resources together to be able to share in the costs."
