As Seen On TV: Bark Off

Do you have trouble getting your dog to stop barking? Have you tried everything, but nothing seems to work? Maybe ultra-sonic waves are the answer. It emits a high pitch sound that only your dog can hear, and trains them to stop that "nuisance barking". But would the Bark Off be a bad dog in our "As Seen on Tv" test?

We have a couple of perfect candidates for the Bark Off: a couple of Australian Sheppard and I'm joined by Brandon Kusz, the owner of these dogs. Do you have a problem with nuisance barking with these dogs?

Brandon said, "We do. We're okay if they bark and somebody's out front, but once they keep barking for another couple of minutes, even when we tell them to stop, that's where the problem is. Sometimes we threaten to get the newspaper or pan. It would be nice to have something that would really work, that we could rely on."

The infomercial for Bark Off states: "Bark Off, the ingenious ultrasonic training aid that finally gives you control over your dog's barking."

So how does the Bark Off work? It sends out ultrasonic waves that only the dogs can hear and it is activated when the dogs bark. So when the dogs bark, it suppresses their desire to bark. It is supposed to be good within twenty feet.

Okay, the dogs are barking. I am going to turn on the Bark Off to see if it works. It's on. "Brandon, are they calmer, at least?"

Brandon: "They're not calmer, I don't think so."

So right now, we are not getting any responses to the Bark Off.

"I have the Bark Off, why are you still barking? I have it on high!"

So far, the bark off is not working

"I have the bark off within three feet of you, why are you still barking?"

"So, is it unusual that this dog has stopped barking while the other is still barking?"

Brandon: "This one is a lot calmer. It's easier to get her to calm down if you just pet her a little bit."

"So you don't think the Bark Off is making her stop?"

Brandon: "I don't think so, but I'm not sure."

"Hey, I've got the Bark Off, why are you still barking? It's on, it's on full blast?"

We have had the Bark Off on for a good ten minutes here and this dog still will not calm down. Brandon showed sometimes the best way to calm a dog down is to simply give it a little TLC, a little rub and maybe that's better than using the Bark Off that, as you can see, is not a howling success. We are going to give it the thumbs down.

I paid ten dollars for the bark off at Walgreen's. They are in a lot of stores and all over the internet. For more information, go to WNDU.com and click on the Big Red Bar.
