You may have gotten your eyes from your mom, but your hips or love handles from grandma or grandpa.
Most of us have an area on our body that just won't budge.
Smart Lipo was pioneered in Europe and FDA approved for use in the US just two years ago.
It's the first and only laser assisted lipo system and doctors and patients are thrilled with the results.
“Most people take one day off,” says Dr. Christopher Peers.
Dr. Peers of Goshen is talking about the downtime for Smart Lipo -- laser assisted liposuction he performs in his office while the patient is awake.
40-year-old Michelle Patino of Goshen is a nurse and mother of five.
She allowed me and photojournalist Don Schoenfeld to videotape her Smart Lipo.
It started with a mild sedative.
“We then use a dilute fluid of salt water that has some numbing medication,” says Dr. Peers.
Dr. Peers infiltrates Michelle's stomach area through tiny incisions. Filling the area where Dr. Peers will use the laser takes roughly 40 to 60 minutes.
After that is done, we all put on special glasses so that Dr. Peers could start zapping Michelle's fat.
“This laser has heat,” says Dr. Peers. “The heat is essential to provide the contraction. The collagen contraction so that gives you the skin tightening you are looking for. That laser also seals off the capillaries, so instead of looking like you got hit by a truck, you get just a tiny bit of bruising.”
And after the fat is zapped, it is removed.
Michelle will go home with an absorbent bandage covering the small incisions, but no stitches.
After three hours from start to finish Michelle is ready to go home. Maureen asks her how she feels.
“I feel great,” says Michelle. “I feel good. I’m a little bit woozy from the medicine.”
Smart Lipo can be used anywhere there is extra fat and ideally a candidate should be within 25 pounds of his or her ideal weight, be in good health and exercise on a regular basis.
Becky Lowe is from Indianapolis and came from Indianapolis to have Smart Lipo.
“I try to work out two to three times a week and it was something that I could not get to change with diet and exercise,” says Becky.
Five months later Becky is still seeing results.
“It's changed my life,” says Becky. “I feel like I am more confident, I stand up straighter because I don't feel like I have this stuff hanging out.”
And how about mother of five Michelle? We visited Michelle in her home just ten days after her procedure.
“I don't have that baby belly anymore,” says Michelle. “Like right here I can look straight down, I can see the curve of my hips and right here I can no longer see that bulge that used to be here.”
Michelle says she ached a little after the procedure but was raring to go the next day.
“We went to the soccer tournament and walked from field to field,” says Michelle.
And even though patients don't see full results for six months, you can barely see the small incisions Dr. Peers made in Michelle's abdomen just ten days later.
“There's two back here and two on the side back here,” says Michelle. “It's so tiny.”
Dr. Peers sees Smart Lipo changing his patients both physically and emotionally.
“The difference is astounding,” says Dr. Peers.
Both Becky and Michelle agree.
“I'm a happy girl,” says Becky.
“I would think every mom could relate to it,” says Michelle. “I feel like I look good again and that was important to me.”
Just how important? You'll have to decide because Smart Lipo isn't cheap.
It generally costs around $3,000, but most patients say it's well worth the price.
And like any procedure, there can be risks. But Dr. Peers says they are minimal.
