16 Curb Appeal Finalist: The May Family

Colorful flowers and green grass are on the wish lists of several Michiana residents.

We heard from people who want the experts from Linton's Enchanted Gardens to makeover their front yard landscaping. We've narrowed down the entries for our 16 Curb Appeal contest to three finalists and later this week, you'll be able to vote for your favorite.

Our first finalist is a Mishawaka homeowner who is celebrating life after cheating death.

Lacy May entered her dad, Mark, in the contest so she could tell his remarkable story.

Doctors, friends and family say he is a miracle. He’s in remission from a cancerous tumor in his head that nearly ended his life eight years ago.

“When I was in 8th grade he was diagnosed with the brain tumor,” Lacy said. “We found out it was stage 4 cancer and we've been working with it ever since.”

“I joke with my doctors, when they told me I shouldn't be alive,” Mark said. “I think the Lord was trying to slow me down, but he could’ve gone about it a different way.”

Mark now battles headaches, blurred vision and limited mobility. He's not able to work, so he's home every day.

His front yard could use some help. He’s able to cut the grass and do light garden work so new, low-maintenance landscaping would be like therapy.

“I think it would really help me to get out. To get outside a little bit more than I do,” Mark said.

Mark and his wife Laurie were high school sweethearts, and have been married for 28 years.

“He was a workaholic, he provided everything for Lacy and I,” Laurie said. “He's just a great husband.”

Now Laurie works two jobs to help cover the bills. Lacy works full time and is a full time college student.

“We love her more than anything in the world,” Mark said. “When I was going through my treatments for cancer, she's all I could think about.”

“I would just like him to be just as proud of his yard as I am to be his daughter,” Lacy said.

Voting begins on Friday, July 26. The winner will receive $5,000 worth of landscaping from Linton's Enchanted Gardens.
