Thousands applying for healthcare coverage run into glitches

Thousands of people trying to sign up for coverage through the country’s new healthcare exchange ran into issues Tuesday.

Workers at The Healy Group in South Bend are available to help people through the process. They fielded dozens of phone calls from people trying to apply through healthcare.gov. The staff ran into problems trying to use the site, too.

“Nobody had any luck today as far as being able to get in, log on and start working through the process of the subsidies,” said Tony Nyers with The Healy Group. “At least, no one got to completion with that.”

Many people experienced the website crashing or logging them off during the enrollment process.

Nyers says he anticipated some issues with the system because no one’s used it before and there hasn’t been much communication about how to do so. He’s hopeful the glitches on the online application will be fixed within a month, but hasn’t received much guidance.

“There were not very many people working at the federal level today because of the shutdown,” he said So, unfortunately there weren't really places to go to get answers.”

Despite the problems, Nyers says people shouldn’t panic – they’ll likely still be able to apply in time to qualify for January coverage.
In the meantime, he says people should try and be patient. They can also apply on paper if they’re worried about the online process.

Open enrollment ends March 31, 2014.
