3 are dead and more than 50 hurt in Nevada air race crash.
Witnesses describe a horrific scene in Reno, Nevada where a World War II-era fighter plane competing in an air race crashed amid a crowd of spectators.
One witness says the plane disintegrated on impact, and others describe bloodied bodies spread across the viewing area. The pilot and two other people were killed. More than 50 people were injured, half of them with potentially life-threatening injuries.
Some are crediting the actions of the 74-year-old veteran stunt pilot with preventing the crash from being even more deadly.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating what went wrong. Authorities say it appears a mechanical failure with the P-51 Mustang was to blame.
