MATTOON, Ill. The last time Dick Diedrich saw his high school ring, Harry Truman had not yet moved out of the White House.

Then about 10 days ago, the 82-year-old Diedrich and Doris, his wife of 60 years, got a call from Mike Geiger of Waukesha, Wis., saying he'd found a ring from J. Sterling Morton High School in Cicero while using a metal detector near his home.

The Mattoon Journal-Gazette reports Geiger had done some research and learned there were two members of the school's class of 1949 with the intials 'R.D.,' including Richard "Dick" Diedrich.

He telephoned them and mailed the Mattoon couple the ring that had disappeared in 1948. That's when his then-girlfriend Doris put it on a shelf while washing her hands.
