NEW YORK A mentally ill New York City inmate locked alone in his cell for seven days last fall died after he was found naked and covered in feces, a rubber band tied around his badly infected genitals.

Documents obtained by The Associated Press show 39-year-old Bradley Ballard was checked on dozens of times in his cell in September before he was rushed to a hospital.

Two city officials speaking on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the case say Ballard probably died of an infection.

He was jailed at Rikers Island last year for a parole violation and was in a mental health unit similar to the one where another mentally ill inmate died in a 101-degree cell in February.
