Ill. gambling expansion, Chicago casino deadline

The deadline is up, and Gov. Pat Quinn says he's going to decide whether to allow an expansion of gambling in Illinois that could bring a casino to Chicago.

Lawmakers sent Quinn legislation about two months ago that calls for five new casinos in the state. That includes a land-based site in Chicago and four more on riverboats in other areas. The proposal also calls for allowing slot machines at horse racing tracks.

Quinn says he'll announce his decision today.

The Chicago Democrat could sign it into law, veto it or use his amendatory veto power to strike parts he doesn't like.

Quinn has said he is unlikely to sign the bill as is. His biggest concern is there aren't enough ethical protections in the legislation.
