The Michigan Lottery says a Detroit woman took home $1 million in the multi-state Powerball game from a free ticket.
The lottery says Irene Molette won a free online Powerball ticket when she scratched off an instant ticket. She played, and won by matching five numbers Sept. 29.
The announcement comes the same day that Michigan Lottery said it generated a record $770 million in profit during the just-ended fiscal year. The money goes into the state's School Aid Fund. The lottery says it tops the previous record of nearly $750 million that was set during the 2007 fiscal year.
The lottery says sales in the 2012 fiscal year that ended Sept. 30 totaled $2.41 billion, its best ever. The previous record was $2.37 billion in the 2009 fiscal year.
