The Trix Rabbit, Tony the Tiger, Lucky the Leprechaun, and all those other colorful cartoon characters on your kids’ cereal boxes will live to see another day.
After push-back from the food industry, government regulators working on guidelines for marketing food to children Thursday told a congressional panel they would not recommend that characters be removed from cereal, yogurts and other food products that are often unhealthy.
Earlier this year, the government proposed voluntary guidelines, asking companies to stop marketing food to kids, by way of enticing characters, when they contain high fat, sugar and sodium.
Food manufactures, backed by house Republicans, fought the proposal, saying they feared the government would retaliate against them if they did not go along with the marketing guidelines.
