Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis says negotiations with Chicago Public Schools are ongoing but the two sides are "miles apart."

The Chicago Tribune reports Lewis gave an update Tuesday afternoon before returning to negotiations. Earlier she told teachers at a downtown Chicago rally that thinking the contract will be settled Tuesday "is lunacy."

Representatives from the union and the district returned to the bargaining table Tuesday as the teachers' strike entered its second day. More than 25,000 teachers are on strike for the first time in a quarter century.

The CTU says it has signed off on only six of the 49 articles in its contract. Union officials say contract talks have included discussions of proposed evaluation procedures. That's been one of the most contentious issues.
