An education group says more than half of black male students who graduated high school in 2010 earned their diplomas in four years, an improved graduation rate but one that still lagged far behind that of their white counterparts.

The Schott Foundation for Public Education says 52 percent of black males who entered ninth grade in 2006 graduated four years later. That compares with 78 percent of white, non-Hispanic male students and 58 percent of Hispanic male students. The group was releasing its report Wednesday.

The foundation has been tracking the graduation rates of black male students since 2004. It said 2010 was the first year since it started keeping track that more than half of the black male students graduated in four years.
