The California Supreme Court this week hears a discrimination appeal from a woman who says she was denied artificial insemination because she is a lesbian.

Guadalupe Benitez says nearly a year of fertility treatment went for naught when her Christian doctors at the private North Coast Women's Care Medical Group wouldn't inseminate her.

Benitez's doctors claimed it was because she was unmarried, which was allowed under the law at the time, eight years ago.

An appeals court reversed a decision in Benitez's favor, siding with the doctors.

A lawyer for two of the doctors says they acted compassionately and ethically, referring Benitez to the other specialist and offering to pay the extra costs.

The case is being closely watched by some who think it could have consequences for procedures including abortion and end-of-life decisions.
