Democrats are calling for even more economic help.
Speaking in the party's weekly radio address, Indiana Congressman Andre Carson says tax rebate checks going out to millions of taxpayers are "a significant first step."
But he says Democrats are fighting for a second economic stimulus package and housing legislation that he says will "help more Americans avoid foreclosure and hold on to the American Dream."
Carson also noted last Thursday's anniversary of Bush declaring "mission accomplished" in Iraq.
Carson says that if a fraction of the billions of dollars spent in Iraq had instead be used in the U.S., "real progress" could have been made in terms of getting the country out of an "economic slump."
