Lebanese soldiers have fired guns and tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters who tried to storm the government headquarters after the funeral of a top Lebanese intelligence official.

The protesters blame neighboring Syria for Friday's car bombing that killed the intelligence official, his bodyguard and six others.

The intelligence official, Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, was a powerful opponent of Syria. He headed a recent investigation that led to the arrest of a Lebanese politician who was one of Syria's most loyal allies in Lebanon.

Protesters also chanted against Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group that dominates the government and serves as the Damascus regime's closest Lebanese all

As the battle raged, protesters and security personnel pelted each other with hunks of concrete, metal bars and tear gas canisters.
