A Los Angeles firefighter has been killed by an explosion while investigating reports of smoke coming from manhole covers near Los Angeles International Airport.
The ten-year veteran of the department was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Fire officials say it does not appear the firefighter was hit by a cover. He and a fellow firefighter were trying to get into a utility room when an explosion ripped through the stucco walls of an adjacent building.
Officials are investigating the cause of the blast.
