This Christmas, George Washington didn't cross the Delaware.

The annual re-enactment of the Revolutionary War hero's trip was halted today due to a strong river current.

The first boat trying to make the short trip from Pennsylvania across to New Jersey got carried downstream. It had to be helped by a rescue craft and brought back to the Pennsylvania shore. About 25 re-enactors were aboard.

It's the 55th annual re-enactment of the 1776 crossing, which led to a rout of British-led forces in Trenton.

Thousands of people line the shores for the spectacle, in what's become a Christmas Day tradition for many families.
